The ARED micro franchise business model is a business in a box solution with a smart solar kiosk used for selling services at a fee. It’s a way to provide people at the base of the pyramid, especially women, refugees and persons with disabilities, opportunities to earn a living as micro entrepreneurs. The program provides a 3-day training and then leases a kiosk with an android based mobile application so beneficiaries can earn a living selling services.
The kiosks are found in urban, semi-urban and rural high traffic areas where you can acquire services like: Phone charging, virtual top-up for mobile airtime, payment for bills of TV subscription, electricity and payment of taxes and government services. All these services accumulate a monthly commission for the micro entrepreneur as his or her income. The mobile app provides them access to the ARED Mobile Shiriki platform where the services sold are acquired from, this also allows for easy monitoring and assistance and support to the micro entrepreneurs.
In this model the micro entrepreneurs use the kiosks as their addresses or premises of business. Most importantly each kiosk comes with an inbuilt Wi-Fi router that has internet and intranet for clients within a 50-meter radius from the kiosk, this Wi-Fi network provides clients with affordable access to internet and information which can provide educational content.

CEI approaches in action
We have 25 solar kiosks in 6 district in Rwanda, we process around 10000 transactions a month. We launch in Uganda in May, 2017. We just launched our latest solar kiosk model with wifi technology and IOT for better monitoring of the kiosk and the kiosk operators.
For Rwanda we are looking at a scale of 600 to 800 Kiosks deployed in all 30 districts o Rwanda in the next 24 months and the distribution of these kiosks will be 20-25 kiosks per district and 70% of the participants will be women and persons with disabilities respectively.
Monitoring & Evaluation
During the project there is monitoring to micro franchisee performance in terms of sales on the platform. The platform can be used to monitor sales revenues in terms of revenues generate and also, sales in terms of transactions done. This allows for evaluation of the participants and in the future we plan to use IOT for monitoring.
