New insights from our partners at UBS Optmius on low-cost private preschools throughout Sub-Saharan Africa were just released. India Faces Steepest Cut in Education Aid | According to UNESCO's Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report (GMR), India - one of five countries with the highest number of out-of-school children - has seen some of the largest reductions in global aid towards education. These cuts have made it increasingly difficult for states to properly implement the Right to Education (RTE) policy that would help children get back into school. Between 2010 and 2011, aid to basic education fell by over 6%, and an additional 3% in 2012, amounting to $278 USD million. Senior officials in the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) assert that given the lack of external funding, the Indian government has the responsibility to ensure that ongoing projects receive the resources they need to be effective. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, also expressed her concern over the situation by stating that: Increasing external support for education is an ethical and development imperative. We know the difference that well-targeted aid can make in helping countries to put quality education first.

Djibouti Unions Condemn Government's Repressive Measures against Teachers | In a message to Education International's (IE) General Secretary, Fred van Leewan, the Syndicat des enseignants du second degré (SYNESED) sought support amid ongoing efforts by the Djibouti government to keep educators out of classrooms and civil service lists. Despite repeated protests, more than 50 teachers have been terminated and removed from civil service lists in alleged violation of procedures in place. In addition, over 80 teachers have had their salaries suspended since October of 2013.

In January 2014, Centro de Alianzas para el Desarrollo (CAD) developed an SME Toolkit - a global web-based product that leverages the latest information and communication technologies to provide SMEs in emerging markets with access to online business management information, interactive tools, and training to help them stabilize, formalize, and grow their businesses. To date, the program has reached 5.5 million users from around the world. This project seeks to improve the lives of people in the developing world by strengthening the private sector through supporting small or medium-sized enterprises.
